ACTUARIAL ANALYST

Benefits Science Technologies is a data science and technology firm founded out of MIT and innovating at the intersection of analytics, healthcare, and software development. We are building THE data science-driven engine to help clients manage risk related to healthcare and insurance - empowering them to make optimal decisions to control costs and improve quality of care for their members. Our passion is finding unique answers to complex questions and continually redefining the leading edge. Under the direction of the CSO, the Actuarial Analyst is responsible for leveraging their health & welfare consulting and analyst background along with growing technical skills to improve and further the Benefits Science client facing solutions. The Analyst is required to manage individual projects and tasks and works with a variety of team members across multiple disciplines within the company. This is a full-time, salaried position, with compensation commensurate with education, experience, and contribution.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Assist in the planning, development, and presentation of enhancements to the core Benefits Science client facing solutions in the healthcare/health insurance space

  • Develop, revise, modify, and maintain complex information dashboards, reports and visualizations based upon sound health insurance principles, strong understanding of benefit finances, and actuarial concepts using Tableau software

  • Primarily partner with the Tableau Developers and the CSO to deliver industry leading results

  • Partner with additional internal and external stakeholders to generate content that is meaningful, insightful, actionable, based upon measurable outcomes, and applicable across our book of business

  • Present, interpret, and train on reporting and actuarial concepts and make recommendations both internally and externally as needed.

  • Identify and translate business needs and requirements into customized design and implementation of intuitive information dashboards, reports, and visualizations that are optimized for performance and use best practices

  • Create project reports and timelines, necessary process documentation (such as naming conventions), and replicable deliverables.

  • Manage own assignments including planning, strategizing, controlling quality, scheduling, and communicating with BST staff and clients

  • Perform other responsibilities as needed for client projects

  • Must pass initial and periodic background checks, and comply with all applicable HIPAA and Security regulations, including including training and certification

  • Must work during standard business hours in the Benefits Science office in Needham, MA, as well as at other times as needed for communication and coordination with our international teams

  • Expected travel will be minimal


Preferred Qualifications:


  • BA/BS in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, or any other related field

  • Minimum of 4 years relevant work experience

  • Proficient in mathematics, actuarial science, and/or data science

  • ASA/FSA designation with the Society of Actuaries is valued, and exam support considered based upon candidates goals and company alignment

  • Understand basic statistical routines (mean, percentiles, significance, correlations) with ability to apply in data analysis

  • Experience working with healthcare or health insurance-related data, particularly for self-insured plans

  • Significant experience in health and welfare benefits actuarial analysis including: reporting, pricing and projections, relative value models, reserve estimates, contribution setting and tiers, etc. (Client facing experience valued.)

  • Tableau Development Skills highly valued (further training/coaching available), such as:

  • Proficient with Tableau software (version 10.0.1 or above; 2 years of experience and certification preferred)

  • Demonstrated ability designing, building, maintaining, and deploying complex reporting dashboards in Tableau, and creating complex data warehouse/business intelligence solutions using Tableau

  • Must have excellent presentation and explanation skills (2 years of experience strongly preferred), with demonstrated experience helping others learn and understand

  • Understanding of design, development and deployment of business intelligence systems and large-scale data warehouses, using business intelligence tools and commercial database platforms (experience with tools such as AWS, Python, R, JavaScript, Spark or similar valued)

  • Must be able to follow a project all the way through to completion paying particular attention to quality and timeliness

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Fluent in English (both verbal and written)

  • Must present a neat and professional appearance

  • Must be a self starter with good time management skills, able to follow assignments through to completion while paying particular attention to quality and timeliness

  • Ability to turn ideas into creative and statistically sound decision support solutions while working effectively independently or as part of a team

  • Fluent in English (both verbal and written), with strong interpersonal and communication skills
