Summary of position:
Benefits Science Technologies (BST) is a data science and technology firm founded out of MIT and innovating at the intersection of analytics, healthcare, and software development. We are building THE data science-driven engine to help clients manage risk related to healthcare and insurance - empowering them to make optimal decisions to control costs and improve quality of care for their members. Our passion is finding unique answers to complex questions and continually redefining the leading edge. Under the direction of the Director of Operations or designee, the Actuarial Analyst leverages health and welfare benefits and analytics knowledge along with technical skills to provide client facing solutions. The Analyst is required to manage individual projects and tasks and works with a variety of team members across multiple disciplines within the company. This is a full-time, salaried position, with compensation commensurate with education, experience, and contribution.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Design and implement business channel projects in the healthcare/health insurance space.
Design, test and administer policies that minimize risk to, and maximize profitability for, the company (BST).
Develop, revise, modify, and maintain complex information dashboards, reports and visualizations based upon sound health insurance principles, strong understanding of benefit finances, and actuarial concepts. Skill with Tableau software is a plus.
Partner with additional internal and external stakeholders to generate content that is meaningful, insightful, actionable, based upon measurable outcomes, and applicable across our book of business.
Present, interpret, and train on reporting and actuarial concepts and make recommendations both internally and externally as needed.
Identify and translate business needs and requirements into customized design and implementation of intuitive information dashboards, reports, and visualizations that are optimized for performance and use best practices.
Create project reports and timelines, necessary process documentation (such as naming conventions), and replicable deliverables.
Manage own assignments including planning, strategizing, controlling quality, scheduling, and communicating with BST staff and clients.
Perform other responsibilities as needed for client projects.
Must pass initial and periodic background checks, and comply with all applicable HIPAA and Security regulations, including HIPAA Awareness Certification.
Must work during standard business hours in the Benefits Science office in Needham, MA, as well as at other times as needed for communication and coordination with our international teams.
Expected travel will be minimal.
BA/BS in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, or any other related field.
Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.
Proficient in mathematics, actuarial science, and/or data science.
Understand basic statistical routines (mean, percentiles, significance, correlations) with ability to apply in data analysis.
Strong computer skills required – Microsoft Word/Excel and mail management at a minimum, with a willingness and ability to become expert at using BST’s proprietary software and associated portals and dashboards.
Experience working with healthcare or health insurance-related data, particularly for self-insured plans.
Significant experience in health and welfare benefits actuarial analysis including: reporting, pricing and projections, relative value models, reserve estimates, contribution setting and tiers, etc. strongly preferred.
Must have excellent presentation and explanation skills (2 years of experience strongly preferred), with demonstrated experience helping others learn and understand.
Must be a self starter with good time management skills, able to follow assignments through to completion while paying particular attention to quality and timeliness.
Ability to turn ideas into creative and statistically sound decision support solutions while working effectively independently or as part of a team.
Fluent in English (both verbal and written), with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
